India is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with over 1 billion people representing more than 1500 ethnicities. This history provides us with an opportunity to learn about India's past through its diverse population histories. This blog post will provide information on what colonial influences have shaped Indian culture and how they have led to this diversity. The following list will focus on the colonial influences that are relevant to India's present-day state. 1) British - British teaching spread in India in areas ranging from education to science, which were topics during their rule in British India. This aided in the transmission of information and ideas in fields such as medicine and geography among other things. 2) Hinduism - 5th century BC Vedic texts and ancient Indian traditions were in an initial stage of formation in ancient India before the arrival of Indo-Aryans. Hinduism is highly influenced by several belief systems, such as Buddhism, Jainism, or Shaivism. This has resulted in a variety of religious practices throughout India's history. Besides this fact, many aspects such as textual content and emphasis also changed during this time period. For example, the three-fold division of humans into higher, middle and lower caste was set during this time period which expanded with the arrival of British influence. More importantly, this practice was established in India by British officials who could enforce it. 3) Islam - Islam was introduced to the Indian subcontinent by the Arab traders, which further influenced Indian development. This religion is followed today by 1.5 billion people all over the world. Although numerous aspects of its practice were adopted, many aspects remained different due to Diasporic communities in South Asia like India (Pakistan) and Bangladesh (East-Pakistan/Bangladesh). 4) Indo-Aryan Languages - The Sanskrit language that developed in ancient India was one of the oldest languages used in human history. This language also had a huge impact on the development of other languages in India. However, this decline of Sanskrit is a result of intermingling between different religious groups while under the colonial rule. 5) South Asia - The region of South Asia consists of nations such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This region has been heavily influenced by several colonial empires from the past such as the British and Mughals. Since colonization occurred in India, it has been reported that these nations shared similar political systems and societal structures for example around institutions of marriage and religion. Nowadays due to industrialization, different countries within this region have created new industrial niches through industrial expansion or industrial cities. As a result, these cities have given rise to new economic systems and organizations. 6) Flag of India - The Republic of India's flag was designed in 1917, when it became independent from British rule. Since then, this flag has had various modifications in terms of color or size to reflect the country's changing history. 7) Currency - The Indian Rupee was introduced during the rule of the British East India Company in 1835 (1 Rupee = 16 Annas). This currency was initially minted in Calcutta (now Kolkata) until 1911 when it was transferred to Bombay (now Mumbai). cfa1e77820
